Addressing Housing Needs and Supporting Rural Shuswap

Focus Group Discussion

By Rural Shuswap Housing Society

Dear Community Members,

row of houses

Housing is a fundamental need that directly impacts the well-being of individuals, families, and the broader community. In CSRD Areas C, D, F and G our region is facing unique housing challenges that require collective action, innovative solutions, and strong community support. To address these concerns, we are organizing a Focus Group Discussion (FGD) to gather insights, share experiences, and explore potential solutions for housing needs in our area. Your voice matters, and we invite you to join us in shaping the future of housing for the Rural Shuswap communities.

Why Housing Needs Our Attention

Housing is more than just shelter—it’s the foundation for a thriving community. However, in Rural Shuswap, we are confronted with several pressing issues, such as:

  • Lack of Affordable/Attainable Housing: Rising costs are making it difficult for many residents to find homes within their budget.

  • Limited Rental Options: The availability of rental properties is scarce, creating challenges for families and individuals seeking temporary or long-term accommodations.

  • Aging Infrastructure: Many homes in our community are aging and require repairs to meet modern safety and energy standards.

  • Lack of Seniors Housing Options: There is a large seniors’ population in both the North and South Shuswap, and the Salmon River Valley and Falkland areas.

  • Population Growth: The increasing population creates higher demand for housing. Many of these are young families who find it challenging to find affordable housing.

These challenges not only affect residents but also the economic and social fabric of our community. It’s time for us to come together and take action.

Join the Focus Group Discussion

To tackle these housing issues, the Focus Group Discussion (FGD) will serve as a platform to:

  • Identify Community Needs: Share your experiences and perspectives on housing challenges.

  • Explore Solutions: Brainstorm potential strategies to address affordability, accessibility, and sustainability.

  • Build Support: Collaborate with other community members, organizations, and stakeholders to advocate for necessary changes.

  • Shape Policy Recommendations: Provide valuable input that can guide decision-makers in addressing housing concerns in Rural Shuswap
