To celebrate the 10th anniversary of our community publication we would like to recognize a few of the amazing volunteers making a big difference in our communities. Individual volunteers and volunteer-led organizations have been nominated by you, the readers.
1 winner and 2 finalists will be announced in each category, based on the highest number of votes received. Announcements will appear on our website and in the July issue of the South Shuswap Scoop. The nominees are listed in alphabetical order.

"Darlene is the dispatcher for South Shuswap Rides and as such works pretty much every day. She has the difficult task of matching ride requests with available drivers which at times is like putting a jigsaw puzzle together. She is a delight to work with and goes above and beyond for our clients."

"Darlene is the volunteer dispatcher for South Shuswap Rides and the main contact with our hundreds of clients we transport each year. She links clients needing rides with the volunteer drivers, which requires a lot of coordination as there are only 2 cars which have to transport an average of 15 clients each week to critical appointments not only locally but also to Kelowna, Vernon and Kamloops for medical treatments. She devotes countless hours each week to make everything work out in an optimal fashion for clients who are reliant on South Shuswap Rides service."

“I joined the organization in 2020 as dispatcher and driver. I had owned and operated a taxi business in Sorrento for 7 years before retiring and felt I needed to stay occupied.”

“Trudy is a natural leader who shares her talents generously with her community. She has been a resident of the Shuswap since 2010 and has assumed leadership roles in several volunteer positions. Trudy joined the Sorrento and Area Community Health Centre Board of Directors in 2024. She volunteered to take over the Presidency in January 2025 and leads the management of our local medical clinic with a high degree of competence and professionalism. We are so fortunate to have as talented a person as Trudy who is willing to share her skills in so many volunteer positions. She has a deep dedication to doing what she can for her community.”

Highlights: “Leading teams of Tutors to benefit hundreds of students feels like we have made a difference to their lives. The Friends are a strong team who through their love of books have raised over $80,000 for the libraries. Leading the current Health Centre Directors has been a challenge as we have undertaken a 10-year review of all aspects of the clinic including staffing, financing, refurbishment, website and governance. The Directors and staff have been enthusiastic, professional and resilient though all the changes. I am most proud of their achievements on behalf of the patients.”
Volunteer inspiration: “I spent 31 years as a Police Officer and in retirement I wanted to continue to help my community. I believe literacy is the key to becoming a confident adult able to fill their potential. I have seen many folk in distressing circumstances and wanted to redress the balance. Tutoring children who giggle has been a great antidote.”

"The Blind Bay Memorial Hall, often referred to as the Blind Bay Community Hall, has made significant and measurable impact on the community of Blind Bay in the past year. The hall serves as a vital gathering place that strengthens community connection, volunteerism as well as local culture in the Blind Bay area. The hall provides an inclusive space for community events, educational programs, fundraiser, arts and artisan shows, wellness activities, seniors programs that bring residents together year-round, all accomplished with very little resources but through a dedicated volunteer-driven effort."

“The Blind Bay Community Society exists as a welcoming gathering place that encourages community connections. Through volunteer-driven programs, events, arts shows, community celebrations, the society fosters social engagement, and supports local artists and organizations. This historical building (community hub) has served residents for more than 100 years.”
2025 highlights: “In 2025 the Blind Bay Community Society was especially proud of the success of its community Coffee House events. Evenings where neighbours could reconnect with old friends while meeting new ones. These gatherings created a warm atmosphere and strengthened community spirit, encouraged local talent, bringing people together through music, conversation and connection. The Coffee House is run by Shirley and Don and sound man Dave and his wife Chris who volunteer their time and service as well as donating all the proceeds back to the hall!”

“Notch Hill Town Hall is the oldest hall in the Shuswap. This Heritage Train Town Hall, School House & Little White Church are actively serving the community over 118 years later, a community hub. In 2025 the NHTHA offered 9 community events, rentals, musical performance, weddings, memorials, fundraising & more.”

“Notch Hill Hall has provided many family events over the years bringing community together and hosting Holiday Train night for the community’s food bank every year. Restoring and maintaining the historic buildings on site help make the community a place for people to enjoy from all areas of the Shuswap. Without a group of dedicated volunteers these events for the community could not happen.”

The NHTHA offers the following programs and services to the community: “Community family events, rentals, memorials, art classes, high tea, artisans schoolhouse gallery & heritage tours.”
2025 highlights: The NHTHA was especially proud of reaching “a 3-year fundraising goal of $30,000 to obtain new accessible washrooms for the hall.”

“NSSCR is a non-profit that works in the community. It benefits children, youth and families across the North and South Shuswap. We run 17 programs, swimming lessons, North Shuswap Food Security Program, Sorrento Preschool, Kids in the Kitchen, Home Alone courses, babysitting courses and many other family and youth support programs in our community.”

The NSSCR’s purpose is, “To provide a network of programs and services to enhance the lives of children, youth and families living in the North and South Shuswap.”
2025 highlights: “The NSSCR Sorrento Preschool became a $10 Day Child Care Centre in 2025. The NSSCR programs had our largest participant attendance year in the 2024/2025 program year - 1783 participants attended programs and services provided by the NSSCR.”
Programming Includes: Sorrento Preschool, Swimming Lessons in the Lake, Red Cross Babysitting Course, Red Cross Stay Safe Home Alone Course, Mother Goose Song & Storytime, Pyjama Storytime, South Shuswap Playgroup, Playgroup in the Park, Kids STEM Sessions (Science, Technology, Engineering & Math), Youth Try It Sport Programs, Kids in the Kitchen, Community Kitchens, Community Events & Activities-Canada Day, Unplug & Play.

The dojo’s purpose is “To promote physical and mental well-being within the South Shuswap community through the structured teaching of Okinawan Goju-Ryu karate and practical self-defence techniques.”
2025 highlights: “In March 2025, ten members of our Dojo travelled to Tokyo, Japan to compete in the Okinawa Karatedo Goju-Ryu Shorei-Kan International Karate Tournament. Through their dedication, discipline, and strong performances, our Dojo was honoured with the Top International Dojo Award — a proud achievement representing the hard work and spirit of our students and instructors.”
Programming: “The Dojo teaches traditional Okinawan Goju-Ryu karate, an effective style of self-defence practiced in a safe, supportive, and friendly environment. Classes are offered for children ages 7–10, as well as youths (11+) and adults, at the Cedar Heights Social Centre, Blind Bay. Our current students/instructors range in age from 7 to 86 years old, reflecting the inclusive nature of our Dojo and the lifelong benefits of karate training.”

“Shuswap Paws is an organization truly deserving of the Non-Profit of the Year recognition. Their dedication, compassion, and tireless work helping animals both within our community and beyond is nothing short of inspiring.
Through rescue efforts, support programs, advocacy, and the love they show to every animal in their care, Shuswap Paws has made a meaningful difference in countless lives. Their commitment reminds us all of the importance of kindness, community, and giving a voice to those who cannot speak for themselves.
What also makes this organization so special is the way they care for their volunteers just as much as they care for the animals. They have created a supportive and compassionate community where people feel valued, appreciated, and inspired to make a difference together.

“We are an emergency rescue for domestic animals. This includes sterilizing every animal in our care to prevent over population.”
2025 highlights: “2025 was our busiest year yet with 588 animals coming into care.”
Programs and services: “We provide trapping of stray cats, medical care, sterilization, microchip/tattoo, vaccine and rehoming. We also have a funds dependent subsidized spay and neuter program.”

Sorrento Lions Club purpose is: “To serve our community.”
For 2025, the organization is particularly proud of hosting their 50th Anniversary Easter Egg Hunt at Sorrento-Blind Bay Park.
The Sorrento Lions Club supports a range of programs, services and events, including, “Eyesight testing in schools, a free community Christmas Party, an annual Easter Egg hunt for local children, Canada Day pancake breakfast, Father’s Day pancake breakfast, support for local schools, student bursaries, Easter seal campership.”

“I nominated the SSFR as they have surpassed 25 years of responding in the South Shuswap, attending hundreds of calls a year, with continued growth in education for themselves as well as the community.” ~ Anonymous
FROM THE ORGANIZATION:
“We are a group of volunteers that have undergone training to be first on scene in an emergency situation, most often arriving before the ambulance can arrive. We practice every second week to keep our skills sharp and are trying to be more actively part of the community in non-emergent scenes. We all love and want to give back to the community.”
2025 highlights: “Just getting out into the community, in a more non-emergency way. We have gotten many more members, more people signing up to become responders and dispatchers, and we want to interact with everyone on days that are happy, and not just sad or scary.”
More about the SSFR’s programs/services: “We are called out by BCEHS to perform critical interventions while the ambulance is on route. Recently we have been involved with Cars and Coffee, will be providing first aid at Music by the Bay, have been to Sorrento Elementary to show the kids what we do and become familiar with our equipment and gear so they aren't afraid of it if they ever need us, have been going to the Seniors Lunches and getting a newsletter out to our members and the public. We are always looking for ways in which we can help!”

“They supply a much needed and appreciated service to the community, supplying people with car rides to medical appointments, shopping or recreational events. It is a free service, or you can donate money to help support them.”

“Excellent organization who provides free vehicle rides to all, especially the elderly who cannot drive to their doctor's appointments, hospitals, and even to get groceries. There is nearly no public transportation in our community to provide this service. Some individuals are at a total loss as to how to get to their doctor's appointments in these troubled economical and political times.”

“A small group of senior volunteers dedicated to helping local people get to appointments outside our community. Five days a week, seniors who don't drive, and others who for medical reasons can't drive are given free rides from Sorrento and area to appointments.”

“Our purpose is to provide all residents in the South Shuswap who cannot drive, with a convenient and free door-to-door ride service to assist them with their activities of daily living including medical appointments.
In 2025 we delivered 632 rides with 27 volunteer drivers using our 2 electric vehicles covering a total of 55,448 kilometres. We are very proud of our volunteer drivers who have received many, many compliments from our riders and who have donated thousands of hours of their personal time to giving back to our community. We are also proud of our sponsors, the CSRD, SASCU, the Government of Canada, the Shuswap Community Foundation and Sorrento Tirecraft who have all contributed financially to our success and ongoing operations.”

Sorrento and District Hospice Society

“Linda Eberle is the epitome of a committed lifelong volunteer! Linda and a group of volunteers formed The Sorrento and District Hospice Society in 1985. She helped provide meals and transportation for seniors. She co-ordinated a medical equipment loan program, which is now very active again in the community. Her society has been rebranded as The South Shuswap Hospice Society with a new Board of Directors. Linda continues to attend Hospice meetings and offers invaluable insight and guidance to the new Board.
Linda's commitment to service lies at the core of who she is. She believes that the essence of being human is connection. ‘If you work to serve others, your purpose is never ending.
Without Linda there wouldn't be a Hospice Society in Sorrento. She's been a dedicated volunteer to this community for over 40 years. That's why we believe that she should be nominated for The Volunteer Lifetime Impact award.”

Shorei-Kan Shuswap Dojo

“Vic, now well into his 80s, has been volunteering his time each week for children, teens, and adults in the community, instructing Shorei-Kai karate at Cedar Heights Community Centre in Blind Bay. He opened the Dojo in Blind Bay in 2011 I believe, and has hardly missed a class the entire time it’s been operating. Vic has said karate helps keep him young both physically, as well as young at heart. He is an invaluable volunteer in the Shuswap, benefiting so many with the practice of karate.”

“South Shuswap Health Services was founded in 2013 with a vision to bring "Healthcare closer to home," operating as Copper Island Health and Wellness Centre. The centre quickly grew with a dedicated team of volunteers providing Seniors Resource Services followed by mobile lab services, and footcare to today where many supports and activities are provided for the community... SSHSS promotes Healthy Communities supporting the determinants of Health. We welcome New Volunteers.”
Highlights: “There have been many highlights. When each organization reaches a goal or discovers a new exciting direction it is exciting.”

"Glenn acts as the main facility manager/caretaker at Cedar Heights Community Association. He monitors and manages all of the HVAC systems, waterworks, lighting, kitchen appliances, doing almost all the maintenance himself. He also manages the cleaning staff and is responsible for the contracts with sub-tenants who utilize our Social Centre facilities. He is simply and quietly excellent. Glenn also volunteers as a Director of the organization, providing practical advice to the planning and operation of the organization's facilities and events."

"Larry has served in a variety of roles with the Carlin Hall Community Association as a board member and for a number of years as president. During that period, and now as a member-volunteer, he has worked to help promote music at the Hall including giving free adult music lessons, with his wife Jane, to anyone interested. He was also instrumental in helping get funding to start with needed renovations and still helps with the sound and lighting for many of the events being held."

Anita has been a member of the Notch Hill Town Hall Association for 55 years. When asked about why she volunteers, she said, "I live here as a farm wife and I have extra time on my hands. We have just helped a number of people who didn't have what we have, we shared things with them."

“Margaret Stokes is truly deserving of recognition for the First Responder Volunteer of the Year Award. While I may not know the exact number of years she has volunteered with the South Shuswap First Responders Association, what I do know is that she is one of the longest-serving and most dedicated volunteers our organization has ever had.
Over the years, Margaret has served in many important roles within the organization. She began as an active First Responder, has served as a board member, and continues today as both a dispatcher and active member of the board. Her dedication to serving our community has never faded. Margaret has helped hundreds of people throughout our area — whether by responding to emergencies, dispatching calls behind the scenes, or supporting the organization with her knowledge, compassion, and experience. She is someone our team can always count on, and her calm presence, caring heart, and commitment to helping others have made a lasting impact on both the organization and the community we serve.
What makes Margaret truly special is not only her years of service, but the love and dedication she continues to show for the South Shuswap First Responders Association. Her selfless volunteerism is an inspiration to everyone around her, and her contributions deserve to be recognized and celebrated. For her extraordinary commitment, compassion, and many years of volunteer service, I strongly believe Margaret Stokes is an outstanding nominee for the First Responder Volunteer of the Year Award.”

"Lesley is an all-star volunteer and trainer for our South Shuswap First Responders Association. She is tireless and tenacious with a little spice for life! She is also a volunteer and trainer for the Tappen/Sunnybrae Fire Dept and treats both families as her own!"

“Lesley has gone above and beyond. She is a member of the Tappen Sunnybrae Fire Dept, taking on many roles. She is a member of the Critical Incident Stress Management Team where she helps guide people after a traumatic emergency incident. Lesley is also an amazing first responder in our community. Always gives of her time to ensure that the responder dispatch organization continues to function in our community. Not sure how she manages to give back so much of her time and still manages a family. This would be a well-deserved award for a very special volunteer.”

“I have been a South Shuswap First Responder for 4 years and their training officer for almost 2 now, attending medical calls by BCEHS until the ambulance arrives ensuring the patient is stable and comfortable to the best of our abilities.”
Highlights: "Speaking to the public about how they can prepare themselves should they ever need to call 911 for help. From ensuring a care card is handy and a list of medications (or a baggy of their bottles of current medication works too) to even informing them of how an AED works and practice good compressions and flow. The excitement and confidence they have in themselves with this new information matters so much."
Volunteer inspiration: "The community. The continued education and skill growth that comes with being a first responder. Always learning as the first aid world is always changing.”

Eagle Bay Volunteer Fire Department
FROM THE NOMINATOR(S):
“My husband loves everything about being a firefighter. He likes the community engagement and pushing himself to learn more all the time. He is really excited to be able to serve these communities that our family is growing up in. In the last five years, he has become a Captain, Instructor, Live Fire Technician, Co-Chair for the CSRD Protective Services Joint Health and Safety Committee, Investigator, Engine Boss and Wildfire Team Member. Jeremy has been writing the articles for the fire hall in the South Shuswap Scoop for over four and a half years in hopes of educating and raising the communities’ fire awareness to reduce call out numbers. He was also recently the Risk Manager for our children’s lacrosse league. No matter what he gets involved in he builds positive relationships and brings his “Teamwork makes the dream work” motto with him.”

“This has literally been a dream come true. Our little family has finally found a community that we can invest ourselves in as much as the community invests in us.”
Highlights: “Driving into a valley in an engine with a rank 5 fire surrounding us and all you have is an Econo hose and a game plan, then being told by the task force leader to go get a stapler. There are honestly so many amazing things that happen as a volunteer firefighter. So many fire paths in front of you. RULES & REGULATIONS
Nominees must:
Be current full-time or seasonal residents of CSRD Electoral Areas C or G (including Tappen, Sunnybrae, White Lake, Eagle Bay, Notch Hill, Blind Bay and Sorrento), or were resident during the period they volunteered.
Volunteer with a non-profit or charity that was engaged in local projects within CSRD Electoral Areas C or G in 2025 (or earlier for the Lifetime Impact Award).
Be age 19+.
Individuals may be nominated in more than one category. Individuals and organizations may nominate themselves.
To be eligible for the Non-Profit Community Impact Award, nominee organizations must be a registered non-profit society or charity based in the South Shuswap (CSRD Electoral Areas C or G) with volunteers engaged in both leadership and operations. Non-profits with some paid staff members are eligible for nomination.
Nominees will be asked to confirm their participation and eligibility prior to proceeding to the voting round.
