A beloved musical gathering brings pickers, players, and listeners together once again.
After a short break, the NimbleFingers Bluegrass & Old-Time Workshops and Festival return this July to the scenic Sorrento Centre in Sorrento, BC. Long regarded as a cornerstone of the Canadian roots music scene, NimbleFingers offers an inspiring blend of world-class instruction, unforgettable performances, and a warm, welcoming community atmosphere.
“We’re delighted to be back at the Sorrento Centre. It’s a gorgeous site to spend two weeks and such a cherished part of the NimbleFingers lore,” says co-director Kelly Sherwin. After the devastating Shuswap wildfires of 2023, they took a year off in 2024 to regroup and focus on smaller events. “It’s especially exciting to be presenting the full festival again,” adds co-director Peter Mynett. “We kept it smaller for a few years with the recovery from Covid, but there’s something so awesome about being together on the big stage in the grass—no pun intended.”
NimbleFingers is rooted in the joy of acoustic music, reflected in its programming—a thoughtful mix of tradition, creativity, and collaboration. The environment is relaxed, the friendships are lasting, and the musical growth is real—whether you’re learning your first tune or trading licks with a lifelong picker. It’s about making music, but also making friends, laughing late into the night, and getting inspired. That’s what brings people back year after year.
NimbleFingers has long been a hub for both mentorship and musical discovery. It’s where bands are born, skills are honed, and lifelong friendships are made. Instructors bring depth and encouragement, while participants range from three-chord beginners to seasoned pros. Held on the beautiful grounds of the Sorrento Centre—nestled between the mountains and Shuswap Lake—the venue offers shady campsites, beach access, cozy lodges, and intimate outdoor stages.
The highlight of the summer is the one-day NimbleFingers Festival, taking place Saturday, July 12. This family-friendly event features some of the most exciting names in bluegrass and old-time, including: Never Come Down, Lonesome Ace Stringband, Jenny Lester, Golden Shoals, John Reischman, The Tone Rangers, Eli West, Miles Zurawell, Chloe Davidson, and The Copper Island Bluegrass Collective. From noon to 10pm, the festival grounds will come alive with music, dancing, food trucks, local artist merchandise, and a shaded beer garden. Pack a blanket, bring the kids, and soak in the sounds. (There is no overnight camping for the one-day festival.)
The two week-long workshops (July 6–11 and July 13–18) are designed for musicians of all levels—from curious beginners to experienced jammers. Participants can dive into fiddle, banjo, mandolin, guitar, singing, songwriting, dobro, upright bass, or simply join to play and learn by ear. With two daily class sessions, afternoon drop-ins, evening concerts, and nightly jams, the program strikes a balance between focused learning and relaxed connection. The event is known for its inclusivity, and while a basic grasp of your instrument helps, no experience is necessary to attend. The community welcomes folks from all backgrounds, ages, and identities—and offers a bursary program to help reduce financial barriers. Bursary details and application form are available on the event website.
“If it wasn’t for NimbleFingers, I don’t know where I would be today. The first year I came, I only knew three chords and had just one friend… that was 8 years ago and I’ve been back every year since. And now I play the fiddle!” - Lasha Reid (participant and longtime NimbleFingers enthusiast).
