MLA David Williams downtown Salmon Arm

Although this past year has been politically turbulent, it has not prevented effective representation for our region. As MLA, I have continued to bring forward the concerns of Salmon Arm–Shuswap to Victoria, with particular emphasis on land ownership and the implications of DRIPA, the steady growth in taxation, and regulations affecting small businesses, construction, and tourism. I have also consistently challenged provincial legislation that erodes democratic accountability, increases the cost of living for families, or reduces local services.

As I review the past year, I reflect on the work our constituency office provided on the local level. Throughout the year, I have met with many residents and business owners to discuss issues of concern, raise awareness of emerging challenges, and engage in open conversations about the future of the place we call home. While much of this work occurs behind the scenes, many matters have been resolved or meaningfully advanced through persistent follow-up and advocacy. Due to the nature of many of these topics, it is hard (and at times not legal) for me to discuss specifics. That being said, in a general sense, my office is acutely aware of local needs such as: Shuswap Lake General Hospital, our transportation corridors, issues impacting farmers, housing, elderly care, homelessness, and more.

I understand that health care access, affordability, road maintenance, and education remain top priorities for residents, and I will continue to hold the government to account on these issues as a member of the Official Opposition. Over the course of the year, our office has worked collaboratively with municipal governments, regional districts, and provincial departments to advance local priorities and bring attention to pressing concerns. In many cases, we share common objectives and have been able to pursue coordinated responses in the best interests of our communities.

As a resident who cares deeply about our region and the families who live here, I remain committed to preserving what makes Salmon Arm–Shuswap a special place to raise a family, retire, or operate a business. I will continue to ensure our communities are not overlooked and that we receive our fair share of services and infrastructure, while holding governments and authorities accountable for their decisions.

While challenges remain, they pale in comparison to those faced by many other regions of the province. We are fortunate—but there is still important work ahead, and meaningful progress must continue.

On a lighter note, over the past year, our office remained active in the community, participating in local events, special occasions, festivals, and providing ongoing support to the many outstanding organizations and non-profits that strengthen our region.

Early in the year, we opened our new constituency office in Salmon Arm. As the year draws to a close, we have also secured a lease for a satellite office in Armstrong to better serve the southern portion of the riding, with an anticipated opening in early 2026.

As we look ahead to the coming year, I am optimistic about the opportunities before us and confident in the strength, resilience, and common sense of the people who call Salmon Arm–Shuswap home. I look forward to meeting many more residents in the months ahead—at community events, local businesses, and in everyday conversations—so I can continue to represent our region with a clear understanding of your priorities.

I may not always be politically correct, but I firmly believe British Columbians need elected representatives who are not afraid to stand up for what matters. I will continue to be a strong, principled advocate for Salmon Arm–Shuswap and to work every day to ensure our region receives its fair share.

Sincerely, MLA David L. Williams
