Funny question we on the Canada Day Committee often get asked: “What day is Canada Day?” It’s always on July 1st but understandably, ya’ll are wondering what day of the week that is. Right? This year, Canada Day falls on a Wednesday. A holiday right smack in the middle of the week. Such fun! It’s an official holiday and we should celebrate because we are blessed to live and play right here in such a beautiful area surrounded by community members who genuinely are good people and want the best for our area. We absolutely love to hold ’the biggest little celebration’ around with all day activities.

Centennial Field is in an amazing location right across from the lake and so close to the swimming areas. The Barker family, who developed Shuswap Lake Estates, have been so very gracious to allow the community use of the field for Canada Day activities and always make sure we have sand for the sand pit, mowed grass and that the water is turned on. Years ago when we constructed the band shelter and put power in, we had only our dreams that Centennial Field activities would expand like they have to now include Music by the Bay all through the summer. It is so great to work with others in our community to ensure that we have family-friendly events for our residents and the many tourists who love to come and visit the Shuswap.

A question that newcomers ask: "what all happens?” Well, for starters, the famous Lion’s Club Pancake Breakfast will kick the day off starting at 8:00am. The Car Show and Parade are gearing up to be bigger than last year and then the day continues with music, kids activities, vendors and more right until we light up the night sky with a firework celebration. There are tons of details coming, so stay tuned to our Instagram or Facebook page. Pretty soon we will inundate you with our music line up, vendors and food trucks and all the good stuff.

One question that we don’t get asked often enough is “how can we help?” Did you know that there are a ton of different areas and avenues in which you too can help to bring a great celebration event to our community. Seriously, let us know what you like to do, what you are gifted in, keen about, willing to do and we will have something for you. We need sponsors and donations to bring really great ideas forward. Our committee is also looking for members to help with planning and executing the activities and vendors, setting up the field, day of help to keep things running and make sure the garbages aren’t overflowing, traffic control, next day field clean up and everything in between.
